What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical term that refers to excessive sweating, far beyond what is necessary to regulate body temperature.

People who experience it may sweat profusely even without physical activity or high temperatures. While not harmful to health, hyperhidrosis can be uncomfortable and cause embarrassment or social difficulties.

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by a bacterium. In a medical and cosmetic context, it is used in very small quantities to temporarily paralyze facial muscles, which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines.

Botulinum toxin is also used to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. It works by blocking the nerve signals responsible for activating the sweat glands, thus significantly reducing sweat production in the treated areas.

How does botulinum toxin help combat excessive sweating?

When injected into affected areas, such as the armpits, hands, or feet, botulinum toxin temporarily prevents nerves from sending messages to the sweat glands, thus reducing the amount of perspiration produced.

This treatment can offer significant and lasting relief to people suffering from hyperhidrosis, thus improving their daily comfort and self-confidence.

How long does a botulinum toxin injection last?

Before the injection, an anesthetic cream is applied to the area to be injected and left to act for 15 minutes. The injection itself lasts 15 to 30 minutes.

Is the result of a botulinum toxin injection immediately visible?

No, the effects of a botulinum toxin injection, whether for cosmetic reasons or to treat hyperhidrosis, are not immediately visible.

Generally, an improvement is noticeable between 3 and 5 days after treatment, but it can take up to 2 weeks to see the full effects. This period is necessary for the toxin to have time to act effectively, either by reducing muscle activity or by blocking nerve signals to the sweat glands.

Is a botulinum toxin injection permanent?

No, a botulinum toxin injection is not permanent. The effects of a botulinum toxin injection, whether to reduce wrinkles or treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), last on average between 4 and 6 months. However, this duration can vary depending on several factors, including the patient's metabolism and the area treated.

For cosmetic treatments, the treated muscles will gradually begin to regain their normal activity, which may lead to the return of expression lines. Regarding hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands gradually reactivate their sweat production.

How long should you wait between two botulinum toxin injections?

It is generally recommended to wait at least 3 to 4 months between two botulinum toxin injections. This period allows the effects of the first injection to dissipate completely and prevents overcorrection or resistance to the toxin.

Furthermore, this interval allows for proper evaluation of the results and planning of subsequent treatment accordingly. Recommendations may vary from person to person.

What are the risks/side effects of a botulinum toxin injection?

Botulinum toxin injections are generally safe when performed by a qualified professional, but like any medical treatment, they can present certain risks and side effects.

The most common ones are: redness and swelling, bruising, headaches, allergic reaction, feeling of heaviness, resistance to the toxin.

Is a botulinum toxin injection painful?

Botulinum toxin injections are generally considered to be relatively painless and less painful than hyaluronic acid injections.

To limit pain, an anesthetic cream is applied to the area to be injected.

Can botulinum toxin be used for anything other than treating excessive sweating?

Yes, botulinum toxin has many applications beyond treating excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). It is primarily known for its uses in cosmetic medicine, where it is injected in small amounts to relax facial muscles, thus reducing the appearance of expression lines.
